Job Description
We are seeking a knowledgeable and customer-focused Benefits and Housing Officer to join our team in London. In this role, you will support residents by assessing housing benefit claims, administering welfare support, and assisting individuals facing housing difficulties. This position is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of UK housing policy and benefits systems, who is committed to delivering high-quality service to vulnerable individuals and families.
Assess and process new and existing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims in line with current legislation
Provide accurate advice and information to residents regarding welfare benefits, discretionary housing payments, and housing options
Conduct interviews and investigations to ensure correct entitlement and detect potential fraud
Liaise with landlords, housing associations, and other departments to resolve housing or benefit issues
Assist residents at risk of homelessness or in temporary accommodation to secure long-term housing solutions
Maintain accurate records and ensure data is processed securely and in accordance with GDPR
Prepare documentation and attend tribunals or appeal hearings if required
Contribute to the development of policies and service improvements.

Requirements
- Previous experience in a benefits, housing, or local government role is essential
- Strong knowledge of Housing Benefit legislation, welfare reform, and homelessness reduction policies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to handle sensitive cases with discretion and empathy
- Strong IT skills, including experience with benefits software (e.g. Northgate, Civica, Academy)
